Colombo/New Delhi, April 25 (NationPress) The President of Sri Lanka, Anura Dissanayake, reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday to express his condolences regarding the tragic loss of innocent lives in the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and to denounce this atrocious act.
"I am deeply horrified by the terrorist incident in Pahalgam that took the lives of 26 innocent people. I just had a conversation with PM Modi to express Sri Lanka's support and our mutual commitment to combating terrorism. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims during this challenging time. We stand united with India," Dissanayake mentioned in a post on X after the call.
Earlier that day, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof also reached out to PM Modi, showing solidarity with India in its battle against terrorism following the tragic attack in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement from 10 Downing Street, it was noted that, "The Prime Minister spoke with Prime Minister Modi this morning. He expressed his horror at the devastating attack in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, which resulted in the tragic loss of 26 innocent lives. He extended his heartfelt condolences on behalf of the British people to all affected, their families, and the people of India. The leaders agreed to maintain communication going forward."
PM Schoof of the Netherlands also condemned this cowardly act and denounced terrorism in all forms.
In response, PM Modi thanked PM Schoof for his supportive words and expressed that India is eager to collaborate closely with the Netherlands to enhance the global fight against terrorism, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
"I recently spoke with Prime Minister Modi regarding the dreadful attack that took place earlier this week in Pahalgam, and I extended my sympathies to the victims, their families, and the people of India. The Netherlands stands united with India in the battle against terrorism, both now and in the future," Schoof remarked.
Numerous global leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, King Abdullah II of Jordan, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, reached out to PM Modi on Thursday, conveying their condolences for the brutal Pahalgam attack.
This violent incident, which resulted in the deaths of over a dozen tourists and left many others critically injured, occurred on Tuesday in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, where four heavily armed terrorists, two of whom were from Pakistan, emerged from nearby dense forests and opened fire indiscriminately on tourists. This attack has been labeled as one of the most horrific in recent history in the region.
Intelligence reports indicate that the Pakistan-based terror group The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, orchestrated the attack.
This tragic event has prompted a series of strong diplomatic and strategic actions from India, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, expulsion of Pakistani military attaches, closure of the Attari-Wagah border, and cancellation of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals.
