Human Rights Group Condemns Lawyer Misconduct in Bangladesh Court After Awami League Bail Grant
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Paris, Feb 25 (NationPress) A prominent international human rights group has issued a strong denunciation regarding the recent incidents of misbehavior exhibited by lawyers at the Court of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Barishal, Bangladesh, following the bail issuance to multiple leaders of the Awami League.
Justice Makers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), a Paris-based rights organization, raised alarms about the situation, claiming that lawyers affiliated with the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) participated in disruptive behavior, which included aggressive pushing and shoving at the bench, unlawfully entering the courtroom, and displaying both intimidating and disrespectful conduct towards the presiding judge.
The organization characterized the events as a direct assault on democracy, judicial independence, and the rule of law.
JMBF has called for an immediate establishment of a judicial inquiry commission, led by a Justice from the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, to investigate the incident, pinpoint those accountable, and ensure that there is exemplary punishment through a transparent judicial process.
The statement released by JMBF highlighted that the chaotic and aggressive atmosphere that unfolded in the courtroom of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate S. M. Shariat Ullah—notably regarding the bail granted to Awami League leaders—is not an isolated event, but rather a serious matter that jeopardizes the independence, dignity, and security of the judiciary.
Furthermore, JMBF asserted that the actions taken—such as illegal courtroom entry, physical aggression at the bench, and shouting at the judge—clearly constitute contempt of court and must be addressed with appropriate penalties.
Shahannur Islam, the Founder President of JMBF, emphasized that despite the availability of constitutional and legal remedies against any judicial order, transforming a courtroom into a battleground and attempting to intimidate or coerce a judge instead of pursuing an appeal or cancellation through higher court channels lacks any legal validity. Such actions are a blatant attempt to influence the judicial process and must cease immediately.
JMBF has urged all parties involved to act responsibly in order to uphold the integrity, neutrality, and independence of the judiciary within the international community.
The organization reiterated that differences should be resolved through lawful means while ensuring that the judiciary is free from any external pressure.
