Liberia's Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti arrived in New Delhi on Thursday, 13 August for an official visit, with bilateral talks scheduled with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The visit is aimed at deepening diplomatic and development ties between India and Liberia under the framework of South-South cooperation.

Warm Welcome from the Ministry of External Affairs

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) extended a formal welcome to the visiting minister, stating: 'Warmly welcome Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti of Liberia on her arrival in New Delhi. The visit provides an opportunity to further strengthen the warm and close ties between India and Liberia.'

The visit signals a deliberate diplomatic push by both nations to elevate their bilateral relationship, which has historically been cordial but limited in high-level engagement.

Jaishankar's Earlier Meeting with Liberian Parliamentary Delegation

The foreign minister's arrival follows a related diplomatic exchange earlier in the week. On Tuesday, EAM Jaishankar met a parliamentary delegation from Liberia that had been visiting India for an IBSA-funded peer-learning programme. The delegation comprised members of the Liberian Senate, the House of Representatives, and the Women's Legislative Caucus of Liberia, led by Ellen-Attoh Wreh, along with representatives of UN Women.

In a post on X, Jaishankar said: 'A pleasure to meet a Parliamentary Delegation from Liberia visiting India for the IBSA-funded peer-learning programme. Exchanged views on development programmes, sharing the experience of Jan-Dhan Yojana, MUDRA Yojana, SVAnidhi, Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana, and Mission Amrit Sarovar. Appreciated their interest and reaffirmed our commitment towards deeper Global South partnership.'

India's Development Model at the Centre of Discussions

The Liberian parliamentary delegation also met Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, in New Delhi on Tuesday. Their visit to India ran from 10 to 15 August as part of a South-South Peer Learning Mission, organised with the support of UN Women and funded by the governments of India, Brazil, and South Africa through the India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA) Fund, administered by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation.

According to a ministry statement, Minister Annapurna Devi 'underlined India's approach of viewing women as active agents of national development and highlighted India's legislative, programmatic and institutional commitment to women's empowerment, including in the areas of women's political representation, gender-responsive governance and budgeting, institutional responses to violence against women, the care economy and women's leadership in local governance.'

India-Liberia Ties: Background and Bilateral Standing

India and Liberia share longstanding friendly relations. Liberia has backed India's candidature at various United Nations (UN) forums over the years. In a significant milestone, India opened a resident mission in Liberia's capital, Monrovia, in 2021, according to a statement from the Indian Embassy in Liberia. The opening of the mission has, according to official accounts, generated considerable goodwill and expanded the scope for strengthening bilateral ties.

With Foreign Minister Nyanti's arrival, both sides are expected to build on this momentum, with the Jaishankar-Nyanti talks likely to cover development cooperation, UN multilateralism, and the Global South agenda.
