Key Takeaways
Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita on Monday, 22 June signed the book of condolences at the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi, conveying India's official condolences on the passing of Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati of Thailand. The Princess passed away on 11 June at 7:48 pm local time at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok, aged 47.
India's Official Condolences
'On behalf of the Government of India, offered our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati by signing the Book of Condolences at the Royal Thai Embassy today,' Margherita wrote on X.
'Her Royal Highness will be fondly remembered for her dedication to public service. Her life and legacy will inspire future generations. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family, the Government and the people of Thailand at this difficult moment,' he added.
Princess's Final Days and Cause of Death
According to a statement issued by the Thai government, the Princess had been hospitalised since 15 December 2022 after losing consciousness due to a heart condition. In April 2026, doctors detected an abdominal infection caused by inflammation of the large intestine, which destabilised her condition — marked by low blood pressure, an irregular heartbeat, and abnormalities in blood clotting.
The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi expressed appreciation to the Government of India and MoS Margherita for the gesture of signing the book of condolences.
Life and Legacy of Princess Bajrakitiyabha
Born in Bangkok on 7 December 1978, Princess Bajrakitiyabha was the eldest child of King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua (Rama X) and the only daughter born to Princess Soamsawali Krom Muen Suddhanarinatha, the King's former consort.
After completing her education, she served as a public prosecutor at the Office of Attorney General in Bangkok, and subsequently in Udon Thani, Pattaya, Nong Bua Lamphu, and Rayong, according to the Thai government statement. She later represented Thailand as Ambassador to Vienna, Austria, from 2012 to 2014, and served as a special lecturer for the Master of Laws Programme at the Faculty of Law, Thammasat University, in 2019.
India-Thailand Diplomatic Ties
The condolence visit underscores the warm bilateral relationship between India and Thailand, with New Delhi choosing to send a ministerial representative to the embassy within days of the Princess's passing. This comes amid broader efforts by India to deepen ties with Southeast Asian nations under its Act East Policy.
