Paris, March 19 (NationPress) French President Emmanuel Macron has urgently called for a cessation of military assaults on civilian infrastructure, especially regarding energy and water supply systems, amidst the ongoing conflict in Iran.
In a social media announcement, Macron revealed that he had discussions with US President Donald Trump and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in light of recent strikes that impacted gas production facilities in both Iran and Qatar. He emphasized that it is imperative to swiftly establish a moratorium on such military actions.
He underlined the necessity to safeguard civilian populations and their fundamental needs, as well as the security of energy supplies from the implications of military escalation, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
“I have just spoken with the Emir of Qatar and President Trump regarding the strikes that damaged gas production facilities in Iran and Qatar today,” stated the French President in a message on X.
“It is crucial for our mutual interests to enact, without delay, a moratorium on attacks targeting civilian infrastructure, particularly energy and water supply facilities. The essential needs of civilian populations and the security of energy supplies must be shielded from military escalation,” he added.
On Wednesday, Qatar's interior ministry alongside state-owned QatarEnergy reported that the Ras Laffan Industrial City had experienced missile attacks, resulting in significant fires and damage.
Earlier that day, the Israeli air force targeted Iran's principal natural gas facility located in Bushehr, situated in the southern region of the country. Israel's state-owned Kan TV News indicated that this strike was executed in collaboration with the US administration.
In the aftermath of the attack, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued an evacuation alert for numerous oil facilities located in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.
Meanwhile, earlier that day, Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian vehemently condemned the US and Israeli strikes against the nation’s energy infrastructure.
He conveyed his thoughts via X following airstrikes that occurred in the southern region of Iran, targeting parts of the South Pars gas field.
Pezeshkian remarked that such “aggressive actions” would exacerbate the situation and “could lead to uncontrollable consequences that may engulf the entire world.”
In a post on X the same day, Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf condemned the assaults, asserting that they signify “suicide for the enemies.”
“The principle of an eye for an eye is now in effect, and a new phase of confrontation has commenced,” Ghalibaf stated.
Earlier that day, Iranian state media reported that natural gas facilities affiliated with the offshore South Pars field had come under attack. Israeli media, citing unnamed sources, affirmed that the nation’s air force had executed the strike.
On February 28, Israel and the United States conducted joint operations targeting Tehran and several other Iranian cities, resulting in the deaths of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, along with senior military leaders and civilians. In retaliation, Iran launched extensive missile and drone strikes aimed at Israel and US bases and assets throughout the Middle East.
