Port Louis, March 11 (NationPress) During an engaging event attended by the Indian community and supporters of India alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Trianon Convention Centre in Port Louis, Mauritius PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam expressed his profound gratitude for the Indian diaspora's role in enhancing the Mauritian economy and celebrated India's significant advancements in various emerging sectors over the past decade.
"I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for choosing Mauritius as your home and as a place to foster your careers. Your presence in Mauritius enriches our nation. Worldwide, the Indian diaspora comprises approximately 35 million individuals, excelling in diverse fields such as Science, IT, literature, cinema, healthcare, and culture," remarked Ramgoolam while commending the Indian diaspora's impact not only in the Indian Ocean island nation but also globally.
He emphasized that the contributions from Indians in Mauritius, particularly in sectors such as construction, tourism, healthcare, hospitality, and financial services, are crucial for the nation’s economic development.
"India is at the forefront of various emerging sectors and is pioneering advancements in Artificial Intelligence. We anticipate further collaboration with India... Thanks to the deep-seated cultural and historical connections between our two nations, India has provided unmatched opportunities to countless Mauritians," he added.
The Mauritian leader expressed gratitude to PM Modi for his visit and reaffirmed the island's dedication to fortifying the strong and warm relationship with India.
"I am overwhelmed with emotion as I appreciate PM Modi's gesture. We are immensely privileged that you could join us as the Chief Guest for Mauritius' 57th Independence celebration," Ramgoolam stated while extending a warm welcome to PM Modi at the event.
During his address, Ramgoolam also revealed his government's decision to award the nation's highest honor, 'The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star' and 'Key of the Indian Ocean', to Prime Minister Modi.
PM Modi is the inaugural Indian recipient of this honor, marking it as the 21st international accolade awarded to him by a country.
"This recognition is well-deserved, Prime Minister. Since our transition to a republic, only five foreign dignitaries have received this title, including the person we refer to as the 'Gandhi of Africa' - Nelson Mandela who was honored in 1998. We are truly privileged to have you here today and appreciate your efforts to join us despite your busy agenda," Ramgoolam concluded amidst enthusiastic applause.
