Historic Moment: Melania Trump to Lead UN Security Council Meeting
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New York, Feb 27 (NationPress) The First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, is set to lead a meeting at the United Nations Security Council during the US's presidency for the month.
According to Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, this marks a historic occasion as it is the first instance where the spouse of a sitting president will take charge at a Security Council session.
Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo will provide a briefing at this session, which will focus on education.
The First Lady’s office has confirmed that she will preside over discussions that encompass education, technology, and the promotion of tolerance.
Melania Trump, a former model originally from Slovenia, is the third spouse of Donald Trump.
Throughout her tenure as First Lady, she has championed initiatives aimed at enhancing the lives of children.
One prominent initiative is the “Be Best” campaign, which aims to shield children from cyberbullying while encouraging responsible social media engagement and improving their health.
She has also worked to elevate the educational and career opportunities for children in foster care.
Michael Waltz, the US Permanent Representative, noted that her leadership of the session aligns perfectly with her advocacy efforts concerning children.
He remarked to Fox News that it is “fitting for the First Lady, a devoted and relentless supporter of children, to oversee the inaugural day of America’s presidency at the Security Council.”
“Her focus on aiding those in need via education and technology resonates closely with our goals at the UN, which are to foster meaningful and enduring peace,” he added.
On Sunday, the US will assume the rotating presidency of the Council for March from the United Kingdom, with the opening session scheduled for Monday.
Trump has previously been critical of the UN, stating that it has not fulfilled its potential, although he has recently softened his stance. Last week, he mentioned that the Board of Peace would be “overseeing the UN to ensure its effective operation.”
This Board was established with the Council's agreement to help maintain the ceasefire in Gaza and facilitate its reconstruction.
However, Trump seeks to broaden its agenda beyond the Council’s established responsibilities.
Despite his criticisms, Trump acknowledged that the UN possesses “tremendous potential” and that there are “many capable individuals at the United Nations,” offering support to enhance its operations.
After previously withholding approximately $4 billion in US contributions to the UN, Trump recently allocated $160 million towards settling last year’s dues.
Dujarric remarked that Melania Trump's presidency of the session signifies the US's commitment to the issues of education and children's welfare within the Security Council.
