Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commended the Indian-American community for its contributions across science, technology, education, public service, and the arts, describing its enduring bond with India's cultural heritage as a source of national strength. The remarks came in a message addressed to the National Alliance of Indian Organizations (NAIO), dated 13 August, ahead of India's 80th Independence Day.

Joint Celebrations Reflect Bilateral Ties

Modi noted that the NAIO was marking two landmark occasions simultaneously — India's 80th Independence Day and the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. He said the dual commemoration was emblematic of the deep relationship between the two democracies.

'The celebrations highlight the close ties between India and the United States, which are rooted in our shared democratic values,' Modi said in his message.

Diaspora as a Bridge Between Two Nations

The Prime Minister underscored the Indian-American community's sustained cultural connection with India, calling it a living bridge between the two countries. He described the diaspora's role not merely as symbolic but as actively reinforcing bilateral goodwill.

'The strong bond between Maa Bharati and the Indian diaspora, which has always been a source of strength for our nation, is also seen in such initiatives,' Modi said.

He specifically highlighted the community's footprint in American scientific, technological, educational, cultural, and public institutions, noting that Indian Americans had earned recognition across a broad range of fields.

Role of Diaspora Organisations

Modi also drew attention to the institutional role played by organisations like the NAIO in preserving Indian traditions and nurturing intergenerational cultural continuity. He argued that such bodies serve a function beyond community networking — they help younger Indian Americans maintain a meaningful connection with their heritage.

'Diaspora organisations play an important role in keeping our traditions alive and fostering community spirit,' he said. 'They also encourage younger generations to stay connected with their roots.'

Wider Recognition of Community Contributions

In his message, Modi also acknowledged the Indian-American community's contributions to the United States economy, schools, healthcare system, businesses, and local communities. He extended his best wishes to the NAIO for the success of its commemorative programme.

This comes amid a period of deepening India-US strategic and people-to-people ties, with the Indian diaspora — estimated at over 4 million in the United States — increasingly recognised as a significant force in American public life. The message reinforces New Delhi's consistent diplomatic emphasis on diaspora engagement as a soft-power instrument.
