Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, 16 May celebrated India's cultural diversity during his ongoing diplomatic visit to the Netherlands, lauding traditional performances from Maharashtra and Assam at a community programme held in The Hague. The event drew an enthusiastic turnout from the Indian diaspora across the country.

Cultural Performances Take Centre Stage

Modi praised traditional dance performances from Maharashtra that were presented during his welcome ceremony, describing them as 'a memorable celebration of Maharashtra's traditions, which are getting popular worldwide.' He posted his appreciation on X, sharing glimpses of the performances with his followers.

In a separate post, Modi highlighted the representation of Assam's cultural heritage at the event, calling it 'a wonderful example of Assam's cultural spirit on the global stage.' The twin acknowledgements underscored the diversity of India's regional cultures being showcased on an international platform.

Diaspora Hailed as 'Living Bridge'

'Deeply touched by the immense enthusiasm and affection of the Indian community at the community programme in The Hague. Their energy and connection with India are deeply special,' Modi wrote, acknowledging the large gathering of diaspora members.

The Prime Minister also praised the Indian diaspora for its contributions to Dutch society and described the community as a 'living bridge' of friendship between India and the Netherlands. He specifically recalled the historical ties of the Surinami-Hindustani community with India, commending their sustained efforts to preserve their cultural heritage across generations.

Strategic Agenda Behind the Visit

Modi arrived in the Netherlands late Friday evening as part of a broader multi-nation diplomatic tour of Europe, aimed at strengthening India's strategic and economic partnerships on the continent. Bilateral talks with Dutch leadership are scheduled, with the agenda covering trade, investment, semiconductors, clean energy, water management, agriculture, defence, and emerging technologies.

The visit is also expected to include deliberations on climate action, green hydrogen, resilient supply chains, digital innovation, and maritime cooperation, according to officials.

Netherlands as a Key Economic Partner

Officials noted that the Netherlands remains one of India's most significant economic partners in Europe, with strong bilateral trade and investment ties. The Dutch port city of Rotterdam serves as a major gateway for Indian exports into the European market, amplifying the strategic importance of the visit beyond its cultural dimension.

This is the latest in a series of high-level engagements between New Delhi and European capitals as India deepens its diplomatic footprint ahead of key global summits later this year.
