Monitoring Committee for Lebanon-Israel Ceasefire Conducts Second Meeting in Lebanon

Beirut, Dec 19 (NationPress) The five-member monitoring committee responsible for overseeing the Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire convened its second meeting at the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) headquarters located in the southern Lebanese town of Naqoura.
The meeting, hosted by UNIFIL, was led by the United States with support from France, and included representatives from the Lebanese Army and the Israel Defense Forces, according to a statement from the supervisory committee released on Wednesday. The committee emphasized its commitment to holding regular meetings to facilitate progress on the ceasefire agreement and Resolution 1701.
The ceasefire agreement, which took effect on November 27, effectively ended the hostilities that began on October 8, 2023, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
This agreement mandates that Israel withdraw from Lebanese territory within 60 days, while the Lebanese army is tasked with securing the southern region to prevent any presence of weapons and militants below the Litani River.
Additionally, the agreement establishes a supervision mechanism led by the United States, involving France, UNIFIL forces, and both the Lebanese and Israeli military forces.
Despite this ceasefire, reports indicate that the Israeli army has continued operations in Lebanon, including machine gun fire, artillery strikes, bulldozing homes, and air raids, which have resulted in casualties across southern and eastern Lebanon, according to official Lebanese media.
In response to ongoing Israeli attacks, Hezbollah has reportedly breached the truce on one occasion, claiming it was a reaction to these provocations.
