Is the Invitation to Asim Munir at European Forums an Insult to the Oppressed?

Berlin, Feb 14 (NationPress) Shafi Burfat, the Chairman of the Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM), has criticized the presence of Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir at international security forums in Europe, describing it as an affront to communities enduring repression and occupation in South Asia.
The Sindhi leader pointed out that Munir has effectively placed the realms of Pakistani politics, the judiciary, business, and media under the “shadow of military boots”, thereby disqualifying him from genuinely advocating for peace.
“His attendance at esteemed global security events in civilized nations like Germany is a slap in the face to the historical nations suffering under oppression and occupation in Pakistan. It is akin to rubbing salt into the wounds of the downtrodden,” Burfat asserted.
“The so-called self-proclaimed Field Marshal and corrupt Army Chief of the unnatural state of Pakistan, Asim Munir, is deeply involved in the systematic oppression, forced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings of marginalized nations within Pakistan, notably the Sindhis, Baloch, and Pashtuns,” Burfat stated on X.
“Political activists are kidnapped, subjected to severe torture, and their disfigured bodies are left behind as tools of intimidation. Under his leadership, egregious human rights violations persist. The same military institution that has nurtured religious extremism and terrorism throughout the region now seeks legitimacy on international platforms,” he continued.
In a letter addressed to the global community, including the United Nations, European Union, and international human rights organizations, Burfat expressed strong moral objections to the participation of Pakistan’s military leadership at the Munich Security Conference, slated for February 13-15.
The invitation extended to the terror state of Pakistan and to Munir, whose history “denotes brutality, corruption, and an authoritarian mindset”, to join the Munich Security Conference raises “serious concerns, profound sorrow, and alarming apprehensions,” Burfat wrote.
“This decision calls for thoughtful and principled scrutiny by the Conference’s organizing committee and all responsible international entities associated with this global forum,” he emphasized.
Burfat urged European nations, warning that hosting Munir, accused of “sponsoring extremism and overseeing systematic oppression”, compromises the foundational principles of human rights, justice, and international law that Europe professes to uphold.
“Providing him a platform at global forums contradicts the global commitment to peace, democratic values, and human dignity,” he stated.
Quoting numerous human rights organizations, the Sindhi leader indicated that enforced disappearances, suspected secret detentions, and the recovery of mutilated bodies of political activists have heightened fears among affected communities across Pakistan.
Burfat emphasized that entire regions, including Sindh, Balochistan, and others, continue to report grievances related to political oppression, cultural marginalization, and economic exclusion.
He pointed out that Pakistan’s sheltering of Osama bin Laden significantly tarnished the country’s international reputation and raised global concerns regarding counterterrorism commitments.
“This incident remains a pivotal reference point in discussions surrounding Pakistan’s security policies and international obligations. In light of this historical and political background, it is profoundly concerning to many observers that Pakistan’s military leadership is being invited to a forum dedicated to global peace and security,” Burfat noted.
Burfat concluded that the Munich Security Conference, which aims to uphold human dignity and democratic principles, must thoroughly assess the ramifications of Islamabad’s involvement, considering the ongoing human rights abuses perpetrated by Pakistani forces.
