Dhaka, Jan 6 (NationPress) As Bangladesh approaches its 13th Parliamentary elections in February, National Citizen Party (NCP) candidate Sarjis Alam is facing scrutiny for presenting inconsistent income figures to the Election Commission, according to local media reports.
In his election affidavit, the 27-year-old NCP leader reported an annual business income of Bangladeshi taka (Tk) 9 lakh, while his tax return for 2025–26 shows Tk 28.05 lakh—over three times the initial figure—both stated separately in the affidavit.
Sarjis, contesting from Panchagarh-1 constituency and identifying as a businessman, has discrepancies between the assets declared and the net wealth reported in his tax return. The tax return lists total assets at Tk 33.73 lakh, while the affidavit reflects a substantially lower amount, as reported by Bangladesh’s leading newspaper, The Daily Star.
According to the affidavit, Sarjis’ liquid assets are valued at Tk 5.61 lakh, which includes Tk 3.11 lakh in cash, Tk 1 lakh in unspecified bank accounts, and Tk 1.5 lakh in electronic goods and furniture.
He declared ownership of 16.5 decimals of agricultural land, categorized as "gifted", with a purchase value of Tk 7,500 and a market value of Tk 5 lakh. The affidavit also reveals that he has one pending criminal case against him in the Gazipur district.
In contrast, the annual income of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has surged to Tk 1.6 crore, more than doubling since 2018, despite incurring a Tk 78 lakh loss in the stock market during the preceding fiscal year, as reported by local media.
Khosru’s election affidavit indicates that his current holdings in shares and bonds total Tk 5.27 crore, while his wife, Tahera Alam, has investments valued at Tk 98 lakh. His shares were worth Tk 1.97 crore in 2018—less than half of the current valuation.
Contesting from the Chattogram-11 (Bandar-Patenga) constituency, Khosru’s wife has also seen her income rise from Tk 9.1 lakh in 2018 to Tk 37.8 lakh, plus Tk 7.02 lakh received as signing money from the real estate group Concord.
As detailed in the affidavit, Khosru has previously faced 35 criminal cases, but legal proceedings have significantly declined, with 34 cases being acquitted, exempted, or withdrawn, leaving one case unresolved at the Special Sessions Judge Court in Dhaka.
With the elections set for February 12, political tensions are rising, deepening divisions across party lines.
