New Delhi, Jan 2 (NationPress) Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who has recently returned to Dhaka following a 17-year exile in the United Kingdom, reported an income of Bangladesh Taka (Tk) 676,000 (approximately Indian Rupees 4,98,414) for the 2025–26 tax year, primarily derived from shares and bank fixed deposits, according to reports.

He heads a coalition opposed to a rival faction that includes the BNP’s former ally-turned-main opponent, Jamaat-e-Islami, in the upcoming February 12 general elections. The Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Md. Shafiqur Rahman, reported an income of Tk 360,000 (around Rs. 2,65,428) primarily from agriculture and donations.

The figures were disclosed by Bangladesh’s Prothom Alo newspaper, which examined the affidavits of both leaders as published on the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC) website.

According to Tarique's declared assets, his total movable and immovable assets are valued at approximately Tk 19.7 million (about Rs. 1,45,24,810). Of that, his movable assets, which include cash, shares, gold, and furniture, are valued at around Tk 19.3 million. His cash and bank deposits amount to over Tk 3.158 million (Rs. 23,28,393).

He holds shares valued at Tk 6.85 million (Rs. 5,050,505) and has bank fixed deposits exceeding Tk 9.024 million. His total savings and deposits are Tk 120,000, while his furniture is valued at roughly Tk 180,000. The value of his gold and other metals at acquisition is listed as Tk 2,950.

In terms of immovable assets, Tarique owns just over two acres of non-agricultural land, with an acquisition value of Tk 345,000. His affidavit also notes 2.9% of land received as a gift, the value of which is currently unknown.

Notably, there are no loans in the name of Tarique Rahman or his dependents. For the 2025–26 tax year, he paid Tk 101,453 in income tax.

There are no active criminal cases against Tarique Rahman at present; however, a total of 77 cases have been filed against him since 2004, which have been settled over time. Some cases resulted in acquittals, while others were withdrawn or dismissed.

Interestingly, Tarique was acquitted in the most cases (42) during the current interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yusus.

Regarding his educational background, he has indicated that he completed the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and identifies his occupation as politics. His declared age is 57. The affidavit also includes his wife, Zubaida Rahman, a medical practitioner, who reported an income of approximately Tk 3.561 million (Rs. 26,25,525) for the 2025–26 tax year, having paid around Tk 558,000 (Rs. 4,11,413) in income tax.

In her income tax return, she declared assets exceeding Tk 10.53 million, including Tk 6.655 million in cash and bank deposits, Tk 3.5 million in fixed deposits, and Tk 15,000 in savings deposits. Notably, she has no immovable property.

Meanwhile, the 67-year-old Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer, Shafiqur Rahman, has declared an MBBS degree as his educational qualification and is currently listed as a physician. His wife, Amena Begum, is a homemaker.

The Jamaat leader has assets, both movable and immovable, amounting to around Tk 15 million. He has no loans registered in his name and paid Tk 30,000 in income tax for the 2025–26 tax year. Among his movable assets, Shafiqur Rahman holds approximately Tk 6.076 million in cash.

He has deposits totaling about Tk 490,000 in banks and financial institutions, and holds bonds, debentures, and shares in various companies worth approximately Tk 2.717 million. Altogether, his movable assets are valued at approximately Tk 10.274 million (about Rs. 75,75,020).

His total immovable assets, encompassing land and home, are appraised at Tk 4,725,834. Among his three children, one daughter has assets worth Tk 500,000, another possesses assets of Tk 1.775 million, and his son has both movable and immovable assets amounting to Tk 30,000.

The Jamaat Ameer has referenced information on 34 cases in his affidavit, with two current criminal cases stayed by the High Court. The others have seen him either discharged, acquitted, or the cases withdrawn.

According to regulations mentioned by Prothom Alo, if a candidate submits false information in an affidavit, their nomination can be revoked, even post-election, leading to annulment of parliamentary membership.
