Washington, Dec 6 (NationPress) A 42-year-old woman from upstate New York has been charged for her suspected involvement in an international human smuggling operation that federal prosecutors allege transported foreign nationals — mainly Indian citizens — across the US-Canada border via several illegal crossings this year.
Stacey Taylor, a resident of Plattsburgh, faced arraignment on Monday after a federal grand jury in Albany issued an indictment on October 2. She is charged with one count of conspiracy to participate in alien smuggling and four counts of smuggling aliens for profit.
Three of these charges are categorized as "second or subsequent offenses." If found guilty, she could face a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison for each smuggling-for-profit charge, in addition to extra penalties due to her repeated offenses.
According to legal documents, Taylor came under investigation on January 20, when US Border Patrol agents intercepted her vehicle close to Churubusco, New York, during the early hours of the morning. Agents reportedly "found four foreign nationals inside her vehicle," after confirming that "the four men, three from India and one from Canada, had just illegally crossed the US-Canadian border without inspection in the freezing weather."
A search of Taylor's cellphone revealed text messages that investigators claim connect her to "numerous other smuggling operations in the days leading up to her arrest." Federal authorities further allege that after her January arrest, she "was stopped during a suspected alien smuggling operation in August 2025, and was implicated in smuggling activities as recently as September 2025."
The announcement of the charges was made by Matthew R. Galeotti, the Acting Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department's Criminal Division, and US Attorney John A. Sarcone III for the Northern District of New York.
Illegal crossings along the northern border have gained heightened attention in recent years, particularly concerning migrant flows from India that have shifted routes due to stricter enforcement measures along the southwestern border.
US officials indicate that smuggling networks have swiftly adapted, often taking advantage of the remote and icy terrains in New York and Vermont to transport migrants into the United States.
The US-Canada border, recognized as the longest international boundary worldwide, has seen a continuous increase in unlawful entries since 2022, leading to enhanced patrols and cross-border collaboration. India remains one of the top countries of origin for migrants apprehended in this area.
