Seoul, Aug 20 (NationPress) North Korea on Wednesday condemned the ongoing collaborative military exercises between South Korea and the United States, labeling Seoul's decision to defer half of its field practices to next month as deceptive.

Following the commencement of the large-scale summer exercise, known as the Ulchi Freedom Shield, which started on Monday and is set to run for 11 days, North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) issued this criticism.

Reports from Yonhap indicate that half of the approximately 40 field drills scheduled for this year have been postponed until next month, seemingly as part of Seoul's attempt to mend its strained relations with Pyongyang.

According to KCNA, "The enemies have babbled about postponing part of the outdoor field drills to next month, but all the basic drills outlined in the actual US-Republic of Korea exercise plan are proceeding as planned, with only messy drills of the South Korean military being postponed."

The news agency asserted that this again illustrates that South Korea and the US' claims of adjusting the exercise as a groundbreaking measure are merely a deceptive tactic.

KCNA emphasized that no matter what strategies the adversaries employ, the enduring reality of the joint exercise as the world's longest-running and largest-scale drills in the Asia-Pacific cannot be concealed.

Furthermore, the KCNA cautioned that North Korea's resolute determination and capability to protect its sovereignty and security will manifest in action, and its countermeasures will be active and overwhelming.

Previously on August 19, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un criticized the ongoing joint military exercise between South Korea and the United States, asserting it reflects their intent to ignite a war and reaffirms their most hostile posture towards the North, as reported by Pyongyang's state media.

Kim also advocated for a rapid expansion of North Korea's nuclear arsenal while inspecting an integrated operation test of weapon systems aboard the North's first 5,000-tonne destroyer, the Choe Hyon, the day before, according to KCNA.

His comments arose as Seoul and Washington launched their annual summer Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise on Monday, aimed at enhancing their joint defense readiness against the North. The drills will continue for 11 days until August 28.
