Seoul, Dec 12 (NationPress) North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has evaluated the nation’s strategy to enhance its defense capabilities as an "exact" approach to safeguard its security against the backdrop of evolving global geopolitical dynamics, as reported by state media on Friday.
During an expanded plenary session of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) held from Tuesday to Thursday, Kim shared these insights, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
This party plenary primarily focused on reviewing the outcomes of this year’s policy implementation and setting the stage for an important party congress scheduled for early next year.
However, state media did not elaborate on other specifics, including whether Kim evaluated the North's policy stance towards the United States and South Korea.
Concerning the assessment of the 2025 policy execution, the North's leader highlighted the nation’s approach to modernizing its national defense as effectively resolving numerous security challenges, according to the KCNA.
He described the North’s defense policy as progressing "along the precise path to ensure the security and defense of the country and safeguard its interests amidst global geopolitical and technological shifts."
Regarding North Korea's military support for Russia amidst its conflict with Ukraine, Kim stated that this move showcased the prestige of its military and nation as "the ever-victorious army and true protector of international justice," the KCNA indicated.
As for preparations for the ninth party congress, discussions were held concerning the amendments to the WPK's regulations for approval at the forthcoming event.
Experts anticipate whether North Korea will formalize Kim's stance on the "two hostile states" in the party’s rules, as it is expected that Pyongyang will heighten its antagonism towards Seoul in the coming year, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
In a significant party meeting in late 2023, the North's leader characterized inter-Korean relations as those between "two states hostile to each other" and pledged to abandon reconciliation and unification efforts with the South.
The ninth party congress is anticipated to occur in January or February, where North Korea is expected to present its foreign policy posture towards the US and South Korea, along with vital policy directions concerning defense and the economy. The previous party congress took place in January 2021.
