Islamabad, Dec 10 (NationPress) - On Wednesday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) accused the government of deploying water cannons to break up a peaceful protest that included Imran Khan's sisters. The protest took place outside Adiala Jail after the prison authorities denied them a meeting with him.
The PTI's statement on X highlighted that the use of water cannons against Imran Khan's sisters and PTI supporters occurred despite a court order allowing the meeting, as reported by the Dawn newspaper.
"This violent crackdown on a peaceful protest infringes upon fundamental human rights and the right to assemble, particularly in such cold weather!" the party declared, sharing footage on X that depicted the chaotic scene as people fled.
In another post, PTI Islamabad asserted, "The Punjab Police has reverted to oppressive tactics! Our peaceful supporters outside Adiala Jail were assaulted with water cannons in freezing conditions; these cowardly acts will neither silence our voices nor weaken our resolve."
The protest arose after prison officials barred Imran Khan's family from seeing him. PTI condemned the use of water cannons against peaceful demonstrators as not just a disgraceful breach of Imran Khan's rights as a prisoner, but also a blatant attack on the constitutional rights of those protesting the government's injustices.
The party has called on international human rights organizations to speak out against these inhumane and authoritarian measures in Pakistan.
On Tuesday, Imran Khan's sister, Aleema Khan, along with PTI members, began their sit-in outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi after being denied access to the founding chairman of PTI, as reported by local media.
In video statements while en route to the prison, Aleema accused the state of violating the law, insisting that the PTI has not engaged in any illegal activities, according to Dawn.
She stated, "If they operate unlawfully while we adhere to the law, and if they are correct while we are wrong, it reflects the dysfunctionality of our system." Aleema Khan also revealed that Imran Khan has been prohibited from meeting his personal physician for the last 14 months.
Since his imprisonment in August 2023, Khan has faced numerous charges, including corruption and terrorism, following his ousting from power via a no-confidence motion in 2022.
Last week, Imran Khan submitted a request to the Islamabad High Court seeking authorization for medical tests and evaluations within three days at Shaukat Khanum Hospital. The petition, filed through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, asked the court to mandate monthly medical check-ups and tests for Khan at the hospital, ensuring full access for medical teams and the opportunity for examinations based on his medical history and current health status, as reported by another leading daily, The News International.
In the petition, Khan requested that a copy of his medical report be provided to his family and submitted to the court.
