Is Pakistan Targeting Journalists While Protecting Terrorists?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, Jan 27 (NationPress) Reports indicate that Pakistan has increasingly misused legal frameworks to target journalists who provide critical coverage of state institutions, leading to investigations, summons, and incarcerations. Meanwhile, genuine terrorists within the country operate with impunity, actively engaging in fundraising, recruitment, indoctrination, and training for jihad, including ethnic cleansing, terrorism, imperialism, and expansionism.
In an article for the American outlet ‘PJ Media’, Turkish journalist Uzay Bulut criticized the West's perception of Pakistan as a 'strategic, major non-NATO ally', describing it as indicative of a “disoriented, unprincipled, and uninformed” foreign policy in the broader South Asian context.
A Pakistani anti-terrorism court recently sentenced eight journalists and social media commentators to life imprisonment in absentia for terrorism-related charges linked to their online support of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. One of the convicted journalists, residing in New York, stated he was never informed about any judicial proceedings against him.
Contrarily, Bulut highlighted that actual terrorists in Pakistan openly promote violence and jihad, with leaders from UN-designated terrorist organizations disseminating pro-jihad propaganda and hosting related events across the nation.
For instance, Maulana Masood Azhar, the head of the terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), spoke at an event on November 2, urging attendees to “join the jihad in the light of the Quran”. Additionally, an audio clip of senior JeM leader Maulana Talha Al-Saif surfaced, in which he encouraged followers to use their Zakat (religious tax) to support jihad, assist jihadists, and aid other needy Muslims.
According to the report, Pakistan is experiencing a troubling resurgence of terrorist factions, particularly Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). These groups, including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and their affiliates like Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and Pakistan Markazi Muslim League (PMML), routinely conduct training sessions, meetings, and workshops throughout the country.
Such events facilitate the free exchange of pro-jihad and anti-India rhetoric, with participants further indoctrinated by leaders of these terrorist organizations delivering sermons in mosques.
