New York, Sep 21 (NationPress) Palestine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its appreciation for the recognition of the State of Palestine by Canada, Australia, and the UK, stating that this decision aligns with international law and resolutions affirming international legitimacy.
In a statement released on X, Palestine's Mission to the United Nations remarked: "We welcome and thank the nations that have acknowledged the State of Palestine: the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. These acts are courageous and resonate with international law and resolutions of legitimacy."
This announcement follows the formal recognition of Palestine as an independent and sovereign state by Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom on Sunday.
In a joint declaration, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong affirmed: "As of today, September 21, 2025, the Commonwealth of Australia acknowledges the independent and sovereign State of Palestine. This recognition honors the genuine and longstanding aspirations of the Palestinian people for statehood. Australia's acknowledgment, along with Canada and the UK, is part of a collective international initiative aimed at fostering momentum for a two-state solution, beginning with a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages from the October 7, 2023 events."
Albanese and Wong highlighted that this recognition reflects Australia’s enduring commitment to a two-state solution, which is viewed as the sole pathway to lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Furthermore, the statement emphasized: "The international community has outlined specific expectations for the Palestinian Authority. The President has reiterated the recognition of Israel's right to exist and has made direct commitments to Australia, including the intention to conduct democratic elections and implement substantial reforms in finance, governance, and education. The terrorist group Hamas should have no role in Palestine."
In a video shared on X, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared: "Today, in pursuit of renewing hope for peace between Palestinians and Israelis and achieving a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally acknowledges the State of Palestine."
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also declared Canada's recognition of Palestine and extended an offer for partnership in nurturing the promise of a peaceful future for both Israel and Palestine.
Carney stated, "The current Israeli administration is systematically obstructing the establishment of a Palestinian state. It has enforced an unyielding policy of settlement expansion in the West Bank, which contravenes international law. Its ongoing actions in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians, displaced over one million individuals, and triggered a catastrophic famine, all in violation of international law. The current Israeli government's declared position is that there will be no Palestinian state."
"In light of this situation, Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and pledges to partner in fostering a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and Israel. This recognition is part of a coordinated international effort to maintain the viability of a two-state solution. While Canada acknowledges that this recognition is not a cure-all, it aligns with the principles of self-determination and fundamental human rights, as encapsulated in the United Nations Charter and Canada’s longstanding policy," he added.
