Manila, July 28 (NationPress) The Philippine embassies in Cambodia and Thailand have urged Filipinos residing in these countries to act with caution and heed official guidance as efforts persist towards a peaceful resolution of the border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.
The Philippine Embassy in Cambodia on Monday called on Filipinos in the region to “stay calm”, characterizing the meeting between Cambodia and Thailand in Malaysia as a positive step forward.
“Please exercise caution and closely follow the safety directives issued by local authorities, particularly in remote border areas, and refrain from non-essential travel to conflict-prone regions within the border provinces,” stated the embassy's advisory shared on social media.
The embassy also urged Filipinos to seek updates from only verified sources, such as official government communications and reliable news outlets, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
In addition, the Philippine Embassy in Thailand recommended that Filipinos residing in the border provinces “diligently follow the instructions, including any evacuation directives, from local safety officials, their employers, and other relevant authorities in the affected areas.”
“All overseas Filipinos near the border are also urged to exercise utmost caution, stay alert, take necessary precautions for their personal safety, and inform the Philippine embassy of their current whereabouts,” the embassy stated on social media on Saturday.
According to data from the Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), there are over 7,000 Filipinos living and working in Cambodia and approximately 33,000 Filipinos in Thailand.
The DFA expressed optimism in a statement released on Friday that “we hope our two fellow ASEAN member states will resolve this issue in accordance with international law and through peaceful means.”
As of Friday, there have been no reports of Filipino nationals being affected by the ongoing conflict, the DFA added.
