Muscat, Dec 18 (NationPress) India and Oman have formally embraced a Joint Vision Document focused on Maritime Cooperation, underscoring their collective commitment to regional maritime security, the blue economy, and the sustainable utilization of ocean resources.

During their extensive discussions at the Al Baraka Palace on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sultan Haitham bin Tarik recognized that their enduring relationship as maritime neighbors has evolved into a multifaceted strategic partnership.

The leaders expressed their contentment regarding the robust state of bilateral relations, which encompass areas such as trade, investment, defense, security, technology, education, energy, space, agriculture, culture, and people-to-people connections. They reviewed the current initiatives and cooperation in the sectors highlighted in the Joint Vision Document, which was adopted during the Oman Sultan's visit to India in December 2023.

Both leaders condemned terrorism in all its forms, asserting that no justification can ever be accepted for such actions. They emphasized the necessity of ongoing collaboration in this crucial area.

In the Joint Statement released post their meeting, the two parties praised the enhanced cooperation in the defense sector and agreed to persist in their collaborative efforts, including joint exercises, training, and high-level visits, to achieve shared objectives and maintain regional security and stability.

They also committed to undertaking joint initiatives to combat maritime crimes and piracy by improving maritime domain awareness and ensuring continued information exchange.

"Both sides expressed their approval of the MoU on Maritime Heritage and Museums, which will facilitate collaboration between museums, including joint exhibitions and research efforts. They acknowledged the upcoming inaugural voyage of INSV Kaundinya to Oman, which showcases their shared maritime traditions," stated the Joint Statement.

The leaders recognized with satisfaction the strengthening of cultural cooperation and the robust people-to-people ties. They endorsed the joint exhibition titled ‘Legacy of Indo-Oman Relations’ and took note of ongoing discussions regarding cultural digitization initiatives. The Joint Statement noted plans to establish the ICCR Chair Programme of Indian Studies at Sohar University to promote cultural and academic exchanges.

"The two sides expressed their concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, advocating for the safe and timely delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians. They welcomed the signing of the first phase of the Gaza Peace Plan and reaffirmed their support for this initiative. They also reiterated their commitment to restoring peace and stability, emphasizing the need for a just and lasting resolution through dialogue and diplomacy, including the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state," the Joint Statement further elaborated.

Both parties acknowledged that their centuries-old people-to-people ties continue to be a cornerstone of the Oman-India relationship. India conveyed its heartfelt appreciation to Oman's leadership for safeguarding the welfare of the substantial Indian community, which numbers around 675,000 residing in Oman. The Omani side acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the Indian diaspora to Oman's development.

Prime Minister Modi's visit to Oman holds special significance, coinciding with the celebration of the 70th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. This visit follows Sultan Haitham bin Tarik's State Visit to India in December 2023.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi received a ceremonial welcome from Sayyid Shihab bin Tarik, Deputy Prime Minister for Defense Affairs, upon his arrival at the airport, followed by a warm reception from Sultan Haitham bin Tarik at the Al Baraka Palace on Thursday.
