New Delhi, June 2 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of Paraguay Santiago Pena Palacios engaged in extensive bilateral discussions at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Monday, seeking to elevate the diplomatic and economic partnership between India and the South American country.

"Towards a new momentum in bilateral relationship. PM Narendra Modi welcomed President Santiago Pena of Paraguay at the Hyderabad House before their discussions," stated the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on X.

President Pena, who arrived in India earlier that day for a three-day official visit at the invitation of PM Modi, was honored with a ceremonial Guard of Honour upon his arrival at Air Force Station Palam.

He is joined by a high-ranking delegation, including ministers, senior officials, and business leaders.

Prior to meeting the Prime Minister, President Pena conferred with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to explore avenues for bilateral cooperation.

"Pleased to meet President Santiago Pena of Paraguay at the outset of his State Visit to India. I value his positive sentiments and guidance for enhancing India–Paraguay cooperation across multiple domains. I am confident that his discussions with PM Narendra Modi today will pave the way for new opportunities for India’s engagement with Paraguay and the South America region," Jaishankar posted on X.

The Paraguayan President also paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat following his engagements at Hyderabad House.

Prime Minister Modi will host a luncheon in his honor.

President Pena is also scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu, who will host a banquet in his honor. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar is expected to also meet the visiting President.

This visit marks President Pena's inaugural official visit to India and is only the second occasion a Paraguayan head of state has visited the nation.

The MEA stated, "India and Paraguay established diplomatic relations on September 13, 1961, fostering warm and amicable ties. The two countries have since cultivated cooperation across various sectors, including trade, agriculture, health, pharmaceuticals, and information technology."

The MEA emphasized Paraguay's strategic significance as a trading partner in Latin America. Indian firms in the automobile and pharmaceutical sectors have set up operations in Paraguay, while Paraguayan companies, mainly through joint ventures, are active in India, enhancing economic ties.

The statement further noted, "Both nations share similar perspectives on various international matters, including UN reforms, climate change, renewable energy, and fighting terrorism."

During his visit to Mumbai, President Pena will interact with state political leaders, industry representatives, startups, innovators, and technology experts, highlighting a focus on economic and technological collaboration.

According to the MEA, President Pena's State Visit will offer a crucial chance for both nations to "conduct a comprehensive review of bilateral relations, as well as to discuss regional and international issues of mutual concern."

President Pena is scheduled to conclude his official visit and return to Paraguay on June 4, 2025.
