Zagreb, June 18 (NationPress) In a gesture symbolizing the centuries-old cultural connections between Croatia and India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was presented on Wednesday with a reprint of Vezdin's Sanskrit grammar by his Croatian counterpart Andrej Plenkovic. This significant work is recognized as the first printed Sanskrit grammar, crafted in Latin in 1790 by Croatian scientist and missionary Filip Vezdin during his time in India.

"To the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, I presented a reprint of Vezdin's Sanskrit grammar - the pioneering printed Sanskrit grammar written in Latin in 1790 by the Croatian scientist and missionary Filip Vezdin (1748-1806), which was based on the insights he gathered during his stay in India from Kerala Brahmins and local manuscripts. With this groundbreaking work, Filip Vezdin emerged as one of the first European scholars to dedicate himself to the study of Indian languages and culture. This also embodies the early cultural ties between Croatia and India," stated Plenkovic.

Ivan Filip Vezdin, a Croatian Indologist, arrived in Malabar as a missionary in 1774 and later took on the role of Vicar-General on the Malabar Coast.

He is recognized for publishing the first printed Sanskrit grammar in 1790, with a plaque honoring him unveiled in Trivandrum in 1999.

Plenkovic also presented a book titled 'Croatia and India, Bilateral Navigator for Diplomats and Business' to PM Modi, authored by Croatian diplomat Sinise Grgica.

"Grgica offers a unique and comprehensive comparative perspective of our two nations, delving into all aspects of our bilateral relations. This book highlights our achievements and the potential for future collaboration, inspiring us to enhance our cooperation and further deepen the friendship between Croatia and India," remarked Plenkovic.

Earlier, PM Modi was greeted with immense enthusiasm by the vibrant Indian community in Zagreb as he commenced his historic visit to Croatia - the first-ever by an Indian Prime Minister - on Wednesday.

Zagreb serves as the final destination on PM Modi's three-nation tour, which also included Cyprus before heading to Canada for Tuesday's G7 Summit in Kananaskis.

In a warm gesture, PM Modi was received by Plenkovic at Franjo Tudman Airport with a formal welcome.

Members of the Indian diaspora, eager to catch a glimpse of PM Modi, gathered in large numbers as the PM's motorcade traversed the city.

A grand welcome awaited PM Modi as he arrived at his hotel, with hundreds of locals joining in.

Amid chants of 'Modi-Modi', 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai', and 'Vande Mataram', PM Modi enjoyed vibrant cultural performances from attendees.

Engaging with locals, he joined in chanting Vedic shlokas and interacted with several individuals in the crowd as he entered the building.

"The bonds of culture are strong and vibrant! Here is a glimpse of the welcome in Zagreb. It is uplifting to see Indian culture held in such high regard in Croatia," PM Modi remarked.

"The Indian community in Croatia has played a pivotal role in the nation’s progress while staying connected to their roots in India. During my time in Zagreb, I connected with several members of the Indian community who offered me an unforgettable welcome. The enthusiasm surrounding this visit is palpable and will surely strengthen the ties between our nations," he added.

PM Modi was later received by Plenkovic at the iconic St. Mark’s Square, where he was accorded another ceremonial welcome.

This was followed by bilateral discussions at the delegation level between the two leaders.

Plenkovic emphasized that PM Modi's landmark visit arrives at a crucial juncture.

"We welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Zagreb! This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister from the most populous nation, occurring at a significant geopolitical moment. We are initiating a new chapter in Croatia-India relations and laying the groundwork for enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors," commented the Croatian Prime Minister.

Analysts believe that this historic visit by an Indian PM to Croatia will bolster political and economic collaboration and present vital opportunities to expand cooperation in various fields, including trade, innovation, defense, ports, shipping, science, technology, cultural exchange, and workforce mobility.
