Guwahati, June 18 (NationPress) Assam Police have apprehended an individual on allegations of disseminating pro-Pakistan material via social media, as stated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday.

The arrest took place in the Nalbari district by a police unit from the Kamrup district. The individual has been named Safiqul Hoque.

In a post on X, Sarma remarked, “Efforts to eliminate anti-national elements persist. @KamrupPolice apprehended Safiqul Hoque, who utilized multiple SIM cards to post pro-Pakistan and communal content on Facebook. Following ongoing surveillance, police successfully captured him in Nalbari.

With this latest arrest, the total number of individuals apprehended in Assam for expressing a pro-Pakistan viewpoint has now reached 94.

Among those arrested, a notable figure is Aminul Islam, a legislator from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). He was the first individual in the state to be detained for his pro-Pakistan stance.

Aminul Islam, representing the Dhing Assembly constituency in Assam, was taken into custody on May 1 under sedition charges after making inflammatory remarks regarding a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in 26 fatalities.

In a video that circulated online, the AIUDF leader asserted that the Pahalgam and Pulwama attacks were part of a “government conspiracy.” He stated, “Six years ago during the Pulwama explosion, which claimed 42 soldiers' lives, I claimed that it was orchestrated by a conspiracy of the Central government to influence the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.”

He further claimed that the incident in Pahalgam was manipulated by the BJP, suggesting that terrorists targeted only Hindus while sparing Muslims.

“However, the victims reported that the attackers fired indiscriminately, and I suspect that the same network behind the Pulwama bombing is involved in the Pahalgam incident,” he added. “If the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi fails to conduct a thorough investigation and seeks to create division between Hindus and Muslims, I would conclude that this incident was orchestrated.”

However, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal distanced himself from the comments made by the party legislator, asserting, “AIUDF stands with the government. Terrorists have no religion, and those who perpetuate terrorism are against Islam.

Point of View

The recent arrests in Assam highlight an urgent need to address the spread of extremist ideologies. While the government aims to safeguard national integrity, it is crucial to balance this with civil liberties and the right to free speech. A thoughtful approach is necessary to ensure unity in diversity, which is the essence of our nation.
