Bhopal, June 18 (NationPress) The government of Madhya Pradesh is set to host a significant event on World Sickle Cell Day (June 19), as part of the National Sickle Cell Eradication Mission-2047, this Thursday.
The highlight of the event will be President Droupadi Murmu, who will serve as the chief guest at the grand program taking place at the sports stadium in Gram Panchayat Taloon, located in Barwani district, according to a statement released by the Madhya Pradesh government on Wednesday.
In attendance will be Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel, who is overseeing the state’s Sickle Cell awareness campaign, alongside Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla.
During the program, several initiatives will be unveiled, including a genetic counselling awareness video and comprehensive guidelines for pregnant women affected by the condition. Panchayats that achieve 100% screening of the designated age group will be recognized.
The launch of the 'Sickle Cell Mitra' initiative, in partnership with the NCC Directorates of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, will enhance awareness among young individuals in tribal communities. Additionally, special counselling camps will be established in 33 districts impacted by the disease, providing genetic counselling, information on disease management, and insights into future medical needs.
The health department indicated that “special camps will be organized from sub-centres to district hospitals at all primary and secondary health institutions to identify patients, screen them, and test other family members.”
Sickle cell patients and their caregivers will learn about management techniques for acute situations like pain crises. Campaigns aimed at screening and counselling will be conducted in severely affected tribal and rural panchayats.
It is important to note that Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission during a public event in Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh, in June 2023. This mission focuses on raising awareness, universal screening of around 7 crore individuals aged 0-40 years in affected tribal regions, and providing counselling through collaborative efforts between central ministries and state governments.
