South Korea is preparing for a presidential election on June 3, following the ousting of former President Yoon Suk Yeol due to his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law.
The government announced June 3 as the election date in light of the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
This decision came during a Cabinet meeting, just four days after the Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment over Yoon's brief martial law enforcement in December.
According to the Constitution, a new election must occur within 60 days following a vacancy in the presidency.
The government has also declared June 3 as a temporary public holiday.
The National Election Commission commenced early candidate registration shortly after the Constitutional Court dismissed Yoon last Friday.
Candidates must complete their registration by May 11, with the official campaign period commencing on May 12.
Additionally, the law mandates that any public servant intending to run for President must resign at least 30 days prior to the election, setting May 4 as the cutoff date.
The newly elected President will take office immediately following the election without a transition team.
