New Delhi, Nov 8 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu is set to commence a groundbreaking six-day State visit to Angola and Botswana from November 8 to 13, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). This visit marks a historic first for any Indian head of state to these nations.
Throughout her stay, she will engage in bilateral discussions with her counterparts, address the parliaments of both nations, participate in significant national events, and connect with the Indian community in Luanda and Gaborone.
In a dedicated briefing, MEA Secretary (Economic Relations) Sudhakar Dalela stated, “The Honourable President will be undertaking this state visit to Angola and Botswana from November 8 to 13, marking the first-ever state visit by an Indian head of state to these countries.”
He emphasized that India's engagement with Africa is broadening across various sectors including politics, trade, economics, development partnerships, and people-to-people connections.
Dalela pointed out that India's Africa strategy is informed by the ten principles set forth by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, with the India-Africa Forum Summit providing a robust framework for collaboration.
“India's diplomatic reach has significantly expanded in recent years, with 17 new missions established across Africa,” he remarked, adding that during India's G20 Presidency, the African Union was welcomed as a permanent member.
President Murmu will be in Angola from November 8 to 11 at the invitation of President Joao Lourenco, who previously visited India in May and extended an invitation for her to attend Angola's 50th Independence anniversary.
Dalela noted, “This year marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Angola. Furthermore, the President of Angola holds the chairmanship of the African Union, making this visit particularly significant.”
During her time in Angola, President Murmu will engage in bilateral discussions, address the Angolan Parliament, and meet with members of the Indian community. The topics of discussion will include cooperation in agriculture, energy, trade, investments, technology, defence, and infrastructure.
From November 11 to 13, President Murmu will travel to Botswana at the invitation of President Duma Gideon Boko. “This state visit underlines India's dedication to strengthening its enduring and amicable relations with Botswana,” Dalela stated.
She will speak to the National Assembly, meet notable figures, and explore opportunities for collaboration in technology, pharmaceuticals, energy, and agriculture.
Highlighting India's collaboration through Project Cheetah, Dalela mentioned that discussions regarding the translocation of cheetahs from Botswana are advancing positively.
He emphasized that this visit “will further solidify India's longstanding partnerships with both Angola and Botswana, opening new avenues for collaboration.”
