Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Doha, March 1 (NationPress) - Qatar has expressed strong condemnation regarding the Iranian strikes on the Duqm Port in Oman and an oil tanker located offshore. The nation has reiterated its unwavering support for Oman as it undertakes necessary actions to uphold its sovereignty, security, and stability.
According to a statement released by Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these Iranian attacks constitute a blatant infringement of Oman's sovereignty and represent an unacceptable escalation. Moreover, they are seen as a cowardly assault on a nation that actively mediates between Iran and the international community, promoting constructive dialogue to address ongoing challenges.
In their statement on X, the ministry declared: "The State of Qatar vehemently denounces the Iranian assaults on the commercial port of Duqm in the friendly Sultanate of Oman, as well as the attack on an oil tanker near its shores. Qatar categorically views these actions as a violation of the Sultanate's sovereignty, an unacceptable escalation, and a cowardly act against a country that has played a significant mediating role in facilitating peaceful discussions between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the global community to resolve outstanding issues."
Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its full backing of Oman in all its measures aimed at safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and stability.
Majed Mohammed Al-Ansari, Advisor to the Prime Minister and spokesperson for Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commented that Iran's actions against Oman highlight a troubling trend that jeopardizes the role of mediators and undermines vital tools for managing crises and maintaining peace.
In his statement on X, he noted: "The intentional targeting of the Sultanate of Oman—a nation that has made genuine efforts to mediate and avert violence, while striving to keep diplomatic channels open—is an assault on the very essence of mediation. Just as we warned when Qatar was attacked for its mediation, this incident reflects a dangerous trajectory that threatens the role of mediators and erodes critical mechanisms for crisis containment and the preservation of peace and stability."
Oman's commercial port of Duqm was reportedly struck by two drones, as per the Oman News Agency, citing a security source. An expatriate worker sustained injuries when one of the drones impacted a mobile housing unit for workers.
The remnants of the second drone fell near fuel storage tanks, fortunately resulting in no casualties or significant damage, according to the Oman News Agency. Oman has condemned this attack, assuring that it is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of its nation and its residents.
