Moscow, June 22 (NationPress) Russia on Sunday strongly condemned the “irresponsible” US follow-up strikes on nuclear facilities in Iran, labeling them a “blatant violation of international law” by a permanent member of the UN Security Council. This action is predicted to destabilize the region and represents a “substantial blow” to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) regime.
Former President Dmitri Medvedev, who has taken a more aggressive stance recently, cautioned that several nations might provide nuclear arms to Iran.
On early Sunday, the US joined Israel, which had already conducted multiple assaults on Iranian sites and other military and civilian targets.
Moscow's response was clear-cut.
“This reckless decision to launch missile and aerial strikes on the territory of a sovereign state, regardless of the justifications presented, constitutes a blatant violation of international law, the UN Charter, and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, which have consistently deemed such actions unacceptable. Particularly concerning is that these strikes were executed by a permanent member of the UN Security Council,” stated the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The ministry noted that the “consequences of this action, including possible radioactive effects, are yet to be determined” but highlighted that “a dangerous escalation is underway, threatening to further destabilize security both regionally and globally.” This situation significantly increases the chances of a broader conflict in the Middle East, a region already marred by numerous crises.
Russia underscored that the attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities have inflicted a serious blow to the global non-proliferation framework established by the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), raising significant concerns.
“They have greatly undermined the credibility of the NPT and the integrity of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) monitoring and verification mechanisms that support it.”
“We expect the IAEA leadership to respond swiftly, professionally, and transparently, avoiding vague language or attempts to hide behind political ‘equidistance.’ An impartial and objective report from the Director General is necessary for the Agency’s upcoming special session,” it stated.
“It is evident that the UN Security Council must adopt a firm position. Confrontational and destabilizing actions taken by the United States and Israel must be collectively condemned,” the Foreign Ministry demanded, urging for an immediate cessation of aggression and an escalation of diplomatic efforts to restore peace.
“It is clear that a dangerous escalation has begun, which could severely undermine regional and global security,” the Russian foreign ministry concluded.
Medvedev further stated that “a number of countries are prepared to directly supply Iran with their own nuclear warheads.”
In a post on Telegram on Sunday, he remarked that Iranians “are rallying around the country’s spiritual leadership, including those who were previously indifferent or opposed to it.”
“At this rate, (US President Donald) Trump can forget about the Nobel Peace Prize – not even with how rigged it has become,” Medvedev added.
