Seoul, April 27 (NationPress) For the first time, Russia has acknowledged the deployment of North Korean troops actively participating alongside its forces in the conflict against Ukraine, according to various media reports.
Valery Gerasimov, the head of the Russian Armed Forces' General Staff, highlighted the contribution of North Korean fighters in the Kursk border region while informing President Vladimir Putin about the 'complete liberation' of that area, as reported by Yonhap news agency, referencing TASS and Ria Novosti.
“I would like to emphasize the involvement of servicemen from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in liberating border territories in the Kursk region... as per the Treaty on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between our nations,” he stated, using North Korea's official title, as quoted by TASS.
This statement marks the initial confirmation of North Korean troop involvement by a Russian official, while North Korea has yet to verify this deployment.
Gerasimov noted that North Korean soldiers were 'accomplishing combat objectives shoulder to shoulder' with Russian forces, demonstrating high professionalism and showcasing endurance, courage, and heroism in combat, according to TASS.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia's foreign ministry, echoed similar sentiments in her first acknowledgment of the North Korean troops.
“Gerasimov reported that North Korean fighters, fighting side by side with Russian soldiers in the Kursk Region, displayed resilience and valor. We will always remember our friends,” Sputnik quoted her from a Telegram post.
Both South Korea and the US estimate that North Korea has deployed approximately 11,000 troops to the front lines in Ukraine since last October to support Moscow's efforts.
