Moscow, Sep 27 (NationPress) An official from the Russian Foreign Ministry overseeing European Union relations has condemned the bloc's overreaction regarding unidentified drones reportedly entering its airspace, arguing that the primary objective is to rationalize a rise in military budgets, as reported by the state-controlled RIA Novosti news agency on Saturday.
The report cites Vladislav Maslennikov, Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department for European Affairs, who stated that the EU is striving to convince its populace of the necessity to enhance military funding, which could jeopardize socioeconomic stability and diminish the quality of life for citizens.
Maslennikov's comments followed sightings of several unidentified drones over airports and military installations in Denmark, as well as in Germany's northern regions adjacent to Denmark this week. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen characterized the drone incursions disrupting air traffic at Copenhagen Airport as a serious assault on vital national infrastructure.
Previously, Vladimir Chizhov, First Deputy Chairman of Russia's Federation Council Committee on Defence and Security, stated on Russia-24 TV that Russia has no reason to showcase its might by sending drones into EU territories, according to Xinhua news agency. Furthermore, Maslennikov remarked that the EU has yet to come to an agreement regarding the specifics of a proposed “drone wall.”
The “drone wall” refers to a system of technological equipment intended to detect and neutralize drones attempting to penetrate EU borders.
On Friday, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo revealed that preparations for a “drone wall” are currently in progress, mentioning that EU leaders will persist in discussions regarding this matter at their upcoming informal European Council meeting, based on a press release from the Finnish government.
European Commissioner for Defence and Space, Andrius Kubilius, visited Helsinki for discussions with Orpo and Defence Minister Antti Hakkanen, concentrating on the proposed drone wall and broader initiatives to strengthen the EU's collective defense.
Earlier this month, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen advocated for the construction of a drone wall as part of the “Eastern Flank Watch” initiative, which aims to enhance security along the Union's external borders.
