Islamabad/New Delhi, May 22 (NationPress) - The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, on Thursday suggested that Saudi Arabia could serve as a neutral ground for discussions with India, proposing that the United States take the lead in mediating between the two nations.
During a press conference in Islamabad, Sharif emphasized that any potential negotiations between India and Pakistan would occur at the level of National Security Advisors (NSA). He also mentioned that the discussions would primarily revolve around crucial topics such as Kashmir, water resources, terrorism, and trade.
Sharif noted a gradual de-escalation of tensions between the two nations, attributed to ongoing engagement between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMO) from both sides.
"If discussions take place between the two rivals, Pakistan’s National Security Advisor will spearhead the dialogue. Saudi Arabia can act as a neutral venue with the US mediating, although India has yet to agree to any neutral site for talks," he stated.
He reiterated that the agenda would focus on Kashmir, water issues, trade, and the fight against terrorism. These will be pivotal points in the discussions between Pakistan and India.
Furthermore, Shehbaz confirmed that the decision to elevate Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal was a government decision made after consultations within the Federal Cabinet and receiving approval from Nawaz Sharif, the founder of the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N).
Sharif’s comments came on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi reinforced India’s unwavering stance against terrorism, asserting there would be no negotiations or trade with Islamabad unless it ends its illegal occupation of Kashmir.
"If there is to be any dialogue, it will concern Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). If Pakistan continues to support terrorism, it will find itself begging for resources, and it will not receive even a drop of Indian water," Modi declared while speaking at a large rally in Bikaner, Rajasthan.
He also warned that "playing with the blood of Indians will have severe consequences for Pakistan."
