Washington, Oct 8 (NationPress) Sergio Gor, the nominee from President Donald Trump for the position of US Ambassador to India, received confirmation through a Senate vote on Tuesday (US time).
Gor was among the 107 nominees confirmed in a vote that adhered to party lines. At just 38 years old, he becomes the youngest US ambassador to India. Gor has been a trusted aide to Trump and previously held the role of Director at the White House Presidential Personnel Office, where he was responsible for vetting over 4,000 positions in the new administration.
Trump announced Gor's nomination via Truth Social in August, stating, “For the most populous region in the world, it is crucial that I have someone I can fully trust to execute my agenda and assist us in MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. Sergio will be an exceptional Ambassador,” on August 22.
Additionally, Trump indicated that Gor would act as a special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs.
During his Senate confirmation hearing in September, Gor referred to India as a “strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond.”
“India's geographical advantages, economic growth, and military strength make it a foundation for regional stability and a vital element in promoting prosperity and advancing the security interests we share. India represents one of the most significant relationships our nation has globally. I am committed to fulfilling a presidential agenda by enhancing our defense cooperation, ensuring fair trade, securing energy independence, and advancing technology,” he elaborated.
He underscored the importance of bolstering defense relations with India.
“I aim to enhance defense and security collaboration with India. This will include expanding joint military exercises, advancing co-development and co-production of defense systems, and securing vital defense sales,” he emphasized.
Gor also pointed out India's demographic advantage, highlighting that its population of 1.4 billion and a “rapidly growing middle class” present “vast opportunities for America, spanning from artificial intelligence to pharmaceuticals to critical minerals, the potential for collaboration is immense.”
Recently, he met with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New York amidst the UN General Assembly.
Following the meeting, the US State Department Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs noted that both leaders “look forward to further enhancing the success of the US-India relationship.”
Gor is also closely associated with Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., and accompanied him on a trip to Greenland in January as part of the administration's effort to garner support for acquiring Danish territory.
