Sydney, June 3 (NationPress) Seven individuals have been apprehended and charged following an extensive investigation into a criminal syndicate involved in the importation of drugs into Sydney. The Multi Agency Strike Team (MAST), comprising 41 officers from the New South Wales police and federal law enforcement, announced on Tuesday that the seven men were taken into custody for allegedly bringing in over 300 kg of illegal substances, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.
A task force was formed in September 2023 to probe the importation and distribution of significant amounts of prohibited drugs and illicit tobacco by a 42-year-old man and his accomplices.
MAST stated in a Tuesday announcement that the syndicate had purportedly boasted about their capability to bypass Australian border regulations, with the 42-year-old utilizing a freight forwarding company based in southwest Sydney to facilitate drug imports.
Two members of this syndicate, aged 43 and 31, were arrested after authorities discovered more than 280 kg of liquid methamphetamine hidden in an industrial cooler imported from Canada in August 2024.
Investigations into the 42-year-old suspect revealed he was allegedly using the freight service to bring in three separate shipments that included over 20 million cigarettes from the United Arab Emirates.
In May, MAST investigators uncovered plans by this man to import 50 kg of cocaine concealed within cement bags from Panama.
He, along with three others—two of whom are Canadian nationals—were arrested following the execution of six search warrants across western and southwestern Sydney on Friday.
All four men, including the 43-year-old arrested in August 2024, were charged with offenses pertaining to the importation of commercial quantities of border-controlled drugs. If found guilty, they each face a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
The 31-year-old arrested in August 2024 and a seventh individual, a 36-year-old apprehended at Sydney Airport on Saturday, faced lesser charges.
Authorities reported that 243 boxes of tobacco were seized from storage facilities due to ongoing investigations following the arrests made on Friday.
