Shigeru Ishiba Discusses the Aftermath of Martial Law in South Korea

Tokyo, Dec 10 (NationPress) Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated on Tuesday that it was unfathomable for anyone to have anticipated the temporary martial law enacted by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol last week, while US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin recognized Ishiba's steady hand.
Ishiba hosted Austin at his residence in Tokyo as Seoul grapples with the consequences of the rescinded martial law declaration.
"The world evolves rapidly from week to week. No one could have foreseen the events unfolding in South Korea. Additionally, people were unable to predict what transpired with ... the Assad regime," Ishiba stated.
"I believe that a century from now, what we witness in 2024 will be regarded as historic. Therefore, we must take responsibility for the current world as well as for future generations," he added, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
Reflecting on the advancements made by the US and Japan in enhancing security capabilities, Austin expressed gratitude for Ishiba's leadership.
"As you highlighted, these are highly dynamic times, and we truly value your steady guidance," Austin remarked.
"May our alliance continue to serve as a foundation of peace and stability in this region for the foreseeable future."
Austin arrived in Japan on Sunday evening for his 13th and final visit to the Indo-Pacific region as the Pentagon Chief. An anticipated component of the trip to Korea was omitted due to the political upheaval following Yoon's unsuccessful martial law attempt.
