Singapore's Urgent Repatriation of Nationals from the Middle East
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Singapore, March 9 (NationPress) The government of Singapore has declared its intention to send a RSAF A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft on Tuesday to aid nationals stranded in the Middle East, facilitating their return from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The joint statement from Singapore's Foreign and Defence Ministry on Monday detailed, "In light of the pressing requirement for Singaporeans in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia to return home, and considering the absence of viable commercial flight options, the Singapore Government is deploying an A330 MRTT aircraft for this purpose on March 10, 2026."
A second flight from Saudi Arabia is scheduled for March 12, 2026, as part of the ongoing efforts to assist departing Singaporeans. The MRTT flights are exclusively designated for this operation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) will be reaching out to those who have expressed interest in assisted departure for additional information.
Previously, Singapore expressed regret over the unsuccessful negotiations that led to military actions by the US and Israel against Iran, followed by retaliatory attacks from Iran affecting Bahrain, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
Singapore also called for all involved parties to resume talks to seek a peaceful settlement in accordance with international law and the UN Charter principles.
In light of the unstable security situation and flight interruptions in the area, Singaporeans are advised to postpone all travel to Israel, Iran, and the broader Middle East. Those currently in the region are urged to take necessary safety measures, including remaining indoors, seeking shelter when alerted, staying updated with the news, and following local governmental advice. A spokesperson from the MFA stressed the importance of vigilance during this time, on February 28.
Moreover, Singaporean travelers are encouraged to explore alternative routes that do not require transiting through this region due to possible disruptions caused by airspace closures or flight cancellations. It is highly recommended that travelers secure comprehensive travel insurance as a precaution.
