Slovakia Warns of Potential Electricity Supply Cessation to Ukraine

Bratislava, Dec 28 (NationPress) Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that his administration might cease electricity supplies to Ukraine as the end of Russian gas transit through Ukraine is anticipated on January 1, 2025. Fico remarked, 'If deemed necessary, we will halt the supply of electricity, which Ukraine is in dire need of during power outages. Alternatively, we can discuss another approach,' in a video shared on social media.
These comments from Fico follow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's disapproval regarding the ongoing transit of Russian gas through Ukraine to Slovakia after the current contract concludes at the start of next year.
Fico further mentioned that projections indicate the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine and Slovakia could cost the European Union 120 billion euros over the next two years. Slovakia, he noted, would incur losses of up to 500 million euros annually in transit fees.
Moreover, Fico expressed Slovakia's willingness to host peace discussions regarding Ukraine. 'Should anyone wish to arrange peace talks in Slovakia, we will be prepared and welcoming,' he stated. Fico met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on December 22 in Moscow, where they discussed matters such as the transit of Russian gas, according to the Xinhua news agency.
On October 3, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico advocated for a swift resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, asserting that the war is 'a misfortune for all' and emphasizing that every conflict must conclude at the negotiating table.
During a press briefing preceding the joint session of Slovak and Ukrainian governments, Fico reiterated Slovakia's dedication to fostering amicable relations with Ukraine.
Nonetheless, the Slovak leader also expressed his desire to mend relations with Russia, stating that if the Russia-Ukraine conflict were to resolve during his term, he would do everything possible to reinstate connections, particularly economic ties, with Russia. 'The European Union requires the Russian Federation, and the Russian Federation, naturally, requires the European Union,' Fico noted.
