Seoul, July 21 (NationPress) – South Korea's defence ministry announced on Monday that the leader of the Drone Operations Command has been suspended amid allegations that military drones were unlawfully deployed to North Korea last year, as part of preparations for the imposition of martial law by former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Maj. Gen. Kim Yong-dae, the commander of the unit, was relieved of his duties on Monday, pending suspension, according to the defence ministry. This action follows the request for an arrest warrant for him related to the investigation into Yoon's unsuccessful martial law attempt last December.
A special counsel team, led by Cho Eun-suk, has filed for the warrant for Kim, who is currently in custody on charges including the forgery of official documents.
The investigation team suspects that Yoon issued direct orders to the drone commander in October of the previous year to dispatch drones to North Korea without informing the defence ministry or the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). The alleged motive was to induce military provocations from North Korea to justify the martial law declaration.
Kim has firmly denied any involvement, asserting there is no link between the drone deployment to North Korea and Yoon's martial law declaration. He claims that the drone dispatch was conducted legally under the JCS's directives in response to North Korea's balloon attacks against the South.
The Seoul Central District Court is scheduled to hold a hearing on whether to approve the arrest warrant for Kim later this afternoon, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
On July 20, Special Counsel Cho Eun-suk's team detained the head of the Drone Operations Command and sought a warrant for his formal arrest concerning charges related to Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law initiative.
Maj. Gen. Kim Yong-dae was detained without a warrant, just a day after the special counsel team interrogated him regarding accusations of aiding the enemy, creating fabricated documents, and abusing his power.
"We have requested an arrest warrant for Commander Kim," stated the special counsel team in a press notice.
"The request for the arrest warrant is based on verified crimes that warrant his custody."
