Seoul, July 6 (NationPress) South Korea has introduced initiatives aimed at creating a "mutually beneficial" framework for manufacturing collaboration with the United States during bilateral discussions on tariffs and other trade matters, as stated by Seoul's industry ministry on Sunday.
Korea's Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo presented this proposal during his meeting with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington on Saturday (US time), according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
In their discussions, Yeo outlined Seoul's vision for enhancing collaboration in the manufacturing sector and developing a supportive supply chain partnership, aligning with Washington’s goal of fostering a "manufacturing renaissance" in America, as the ministry reported.
Yeo emphasized that the elimination or reduction of US tariffs on critical items such as automobiles and steel should be integral to the final trade agreement, asserting that South Korea has been negotiating with the US in "good faith."
The two parties also deliberated on extending the suspension of the 25 percent reciprocal tariffs imposed on South Korea by the administration of Donald Trump, allowing for more meaningful trade negotiations. The US administration's 90-day pause on these tariffs is set to conclude on Tuesday, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
South Korea is advocating for a complete exemption or reduction of US reciprocal tariffs and sectoral duties on imported vehicles, steel, and other products through a comprehensive package deal that includes tariffs, non-tariff measures, industrial cooperation, and various trade concerns.
"Since the inception of the new administration (in South Korea), both Seoul and Washington are fully committed to negotiations aimed at discovering mutually beneficial, win-win solutions for trade challenges," Yeo stated.
"Despite ongoing uncertainties, we will persist in our negotiations with the US until the conclusion, adhering to the principle of safeguarding our national interests to secure a favorable outcome regarding US tariff policies while also striving to sustain the strong momentum of bilateral cooperation that has developed over the years between our nations."
