Seoul, Jan 2 (NationPress) South Korea's Foreign Minister Cho Hyun has committed to transforming the nation's diplomatic missions abroad to enhance their operational efficacy as part of initiatives aimed at broadening and diversifying South Korea's foreign policy in response to a changing global environment.
In a New Year address to officials at the foreign ministry, Cho outlined intentions to optimize missions considered less effective while strengthening those in critical areas.
"For missions that exhibit limited effectiveness, we will implement strategic restructuring and bolster key functions by concentrating on essential objectives," Cho articulated in his speech, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
These comments came after reports emerged that the ministry abandoned plans to establish new embassies in multiple nations following President Lee Jae Myung's concerns regarding the necessity for expansion, reversing a strategy previously advocated by the former Yoon Suk Yeol administration.
Cho emphasized the need for overseas missions to collaborate more effectively with South Korean public entities operating internationally to ensure that the partnerships yield tangible benefits for Korean nationals and enterprises situated in those nations.
"We will introduce systematic performance and service management measures, such as enhancing the authority of heads of overseas missions to oversee local public institutions effectively and selecting qualified officials for overseas assignments," he noted.
Additionally, Cho pledged to lead the ministry in pursuing more summit-level diplomacy and expanding the "economic horizons" of foreign policy.
"It has become crucial to explore and expand new economic opportunities," he stated. "We will work to advance diplomacy that enhances citizens' livelihoods and invigorates businesses."
Looking forward, he indicated plans to intensify summit-level diplomacy and actively engage with key regions to broaden South Korea's diplomatic reach.
On December 22, Cho Hyun reiterated his commitment to fostering peace on the Korean Peninsula by fostering dialogue with North Korea and other relevant countries, reaffirming the government's intent to reconnect with Pyongyang.
In a keynote address at an event hosted by the South Korea-US Parliamentarians Union, he affirmed the necessity for reflection on the actions required to ensure security and peace on the peninsula.
“The two summit meetings between South Korea and the United States this year will lay the groundwork for these efforts,” he emphasized, highlighting the urgency of "swift and effective" negotiations concerning the agreements established in the joint fact sheet.
He added that South Korea must enhance its deterrence capabilities while simultaneously pursuing dialogue with North Korea and other pertinent nations.
