Gyeongju (South Korea), Oct 30 (NationPress) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney engaged in summit discussions on Thursday, reaching an agreement to enhance their strategic alliance in defense, security, and military intelligence sharing.
The two heads of state expressed their approval of a joint declaration aimed at solidifying their nations' strategic partnership in security and defense, with a focus on expanding arms and defense collaboration.
According to the statement, “This significant partnership establishes a clear, action-oriented framework for accelerating defense cooperation, boosting interoperability and readiness, enhancing defense industrial collaboration, and collectively contributing to regional and global stability.”
It further emphasized that “This initiative will facilitate efforts toward a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region, foster innovation and resilience within defense industries, and generate new opportunities for Korean and Canadian workers and businesses.”
The summit occurred during Carney's official visit to South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and other related events in the southeastern city of Gyeongju.
Both leaders also announced the successful conclusion of “substantive negotiations” over a deal concerning the safeguarding of military and defense classified information, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
As per the statement, “The agreement will offer a secure and trusted framework for the exchange and safeguarding of classified information to support enhanced defense, security, and defense industrial cooperation.”
Once enacted, the agreement will lay the legal groundwork for improved collaboration in defense procurement, defense industrial security, research, and operational coordination.
This marked their second summit following their discussions in Canada during the Group of Seven summit in June, shortly after Lee assumed office.
After their talks, Carney proceeded to nearby Geoje to visit Hanwha Ocean's shipyard, accompanied by Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, as per the presidential office.
Hanwha Ocean is vying against ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems of Germany for Canada's submarine acquisition program, projected to be valued at up to 60 trillion won ($43.7 billion).
