Gyeongju, Oct 29 (NationPress) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung presented US President Donald Trump with a replica of a gold crown from an ancient Korean dynasty and bestowed upon him the highest state medal during his State Visit to South Korea.
The replica of the Cheonmachong crown was unveiled at a welcoming event held at the Gyeongju National Museum in the southeastern city of Gyeongju, historically significant as the capital of the Silla Kingdom (57 BC-AD 935).
“To new trust and companionship between Korea and the United States,” Lee stated through an interpreter while presenting Trump with the crown, which was encased in a glass display, according to a report from Yonhap News Agency.
“We present this gold crown to you on this joyous occasion of your State Visit to Gyeongju because it embodies the spirit of Silla, which first brought peace to the Korean Peninsula, marking the onset of a golden age in the Korea-US alliance,” remarked Deputy Foreign Minister for Protocol Affairs Kim Tae-jin.
According to the official, the crown signifies the “divine connection” between celestial authority and earthly sovereignty, as well as the strong leadership and authority of a ruler.
The intricately designed artifact from the Silla era is regarded as a pinnacle of ancient Korean metallurgy, having been unearthed in 1973 from the Cheonmachong Tomb in Gyeongju.
Lee, donning a golden tie, also awarded Trump the Grand Order of Mugunghwa—the nation's highest honor—in acknowledgment of his contributions to peace on the Korean Peninsula and his ongoing role in fostering stability.
This event marked the first instance of a US President receiving such an honor.
Trump expressed gratitude to Lee, emphasizing that South Korea and the United States share a “very great” relationship that is set to strengthen further.
Earlier in the day, Trump arrived in South Korea for a two-day State Visit, coinciding with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation gathering. On the sidelines, he is slated to engage in summit discussions with both Lee and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
