Lausanne, Oct 29 (NationPress) The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has confirmed that Oman will be included in the lineup of teams participating in the upcoming Men’s Junior World Cup in Tamil Nadu 2025, following Pakistan's unexpected withdrawal from the tournament.
The event is scheduled to be held from November 28 to December 10 in Chennai and Madurai. Oman earned its spot as the next highest-ranked team in the continental championship, the Junior Asia Cup 2024.
The Pakistan Hockey Federation informed the International Hockey Federation (FIH) that they have declined the invitation to take part in the upcoming FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Tamil Nadu 2025, even after qualifying for the event during last year's Asia Junior Cup.
Pakistan was originally placed in Group B alongside India, Chile, and Switzerland, and Oman will now take their place.
This last-minute withdrawal puts the FIH in a challenging situation, having postponed the draw for the event for almost a month to allow Pakistan time to discuss their participation with their government. The FIH eventually proceeded with the draw ceremony at its headquarters in Lausanne instead of in the host city.
This marks the second event in India from which Pakistan has withdrawn, following the Men's Asia Cup in Rajgir, Bihar, where they were replaced by Bangladesh. Their withdrawal has cost them a chance to participate in the next year’s World Cup, as this event served as a qualifying round.
For the first time, the FIH Hockey Junior World Cups in 2025, for both women and men, will feature 24 teams, enhancing accessibility to FIH events, a key principle of the FIH Empowerment and Engagement strategy.
Germany are the current champions, having won the 2023 edition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
