Seoul, Aug 3 (NationPress) Prominent South Korean shipbuilders have established a collaborative task force aimed at bolstering the government's partnership with the United States regarding a recently finalized extensive investment initiative in the American shipbuilding industry, officials reported on Sunday.
The leading three shipbuilders -- HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Hanwha Ocean Co., and Samsung Heavy Industries Co. -- together with the Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Association, have created this task force and convened for their first meeting recently, according to company representatives.
This initiative will concentrate on endorsing the “Make American Shipbuilding Great Again” (MASGA) campaign, under which the South Korean government has proposed a substantial investment of $150 billion into the US shipbuilding sector.
This is part of a more extensive $350 billion investment strategy in the US, aimed at persuading Washington to reduce reciprocal tariffs on South Korean imports from 25 percent to 15 percent, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
"There will be various ways to implement the Korea-US shipbuilding cooperation, and the task force aims to support and facilitate those efforts," asserted an official. "The industry is collaborating with the government on the MASGA project through this task force."
The anticipated investment stands as the largest single-industry fund within the package and is designed primarily to assist Korean shipbuilders' investments in the US through public financing.
The MASGA initiative comprises plans for constructing new shipyards in the US, training shipbuilding personnel, revitalizing related supply chains, and collaboratively working on maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) projects for American vessels, according to the South Korean government. However, specifics are still being finalized.
The entity intends to amplify discussions regarding the project starting in mid-August, following the industry's summer break.
"The task force could function as a conduit for gathering the industry's needs and communicating them to the government," the official added.
