Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, March 3 (NationPress) Approximately 21,000 South Korean citizens are presently located in the Middle East amidst rising tensions due to recent US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, officials reported on Tuesday.
Government representatives are exploring various options to determine if South Koreans, including both residents and short-term visitors, can be moved to nearby countries or returned home, they stated.
"About 21,000 South Korean nationals are situated across 13 Middle Eastern nations, with an estimated 4,000 short-term visitors currently in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), particularly in Dubai," said Rep. Kim Young-bae from the ruling Democratic Party (DP) during a press briefing following a gathering of government officials and DP lawmakers at the National Assembly, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
Currently, a total of 59 South Koreans, excluding embassy personnel, remain in Iran, while 616 nationals are residing in Israel.
"Assessing the duration of this situation is challenging, so we are first identifying the number of travelers in need of immediate assistance," he explained. "We will consider options for relocating them to nations with open airspace."
In light of the US-Israeli attacks on Iran, countries such as Iran, Israel, Bahrain, UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait have shut down their airspace, according to Kim.
The United States and Israel initiated a significant joint military operation against Iran on Saturday, which both governments describe as preemptive strikes aimed at Iranian leadership, nuclear facilities, and military infrastructure. The US termed the operation 'Epic Fury', while Israel designated it 'Lion's Roar'. These strikes commenced just two days after US-Iran negotiations regarding Tehran's nuclear program concluded without a resolution. Iran has consistently asserted that its nuclear endeavors are exclusively peaceful.
The ongoing strikes have resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, marking a significant escalation. In retaliation, Iran has targeted US bases in several Gulf nations, including Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and UAE, with reports indicating civilian casualties.
