Sri Lanka to Increase Disability Allowance in 2025 Budget

Colombo, Dec 6 (NationPress) The government of Sri Lanka is preparing to boost the financial support for the disabled community to Rs 10,000 (around $35) from the existing Rs 7,500 (approximately $26), as revealed by Sugath Wasantha de Silva, the first visually impaired Member of Parliament in this South Asian nation, during his maiden speech on Friday.
He declared that this enhancement will be implemented in the 2025 budget. The government's overarching aim for the next five years is to socially empower individuals with disabilities and offer training programs to encourage their active involvement in the nation’s workforce.
De Silva pointed out that Sri Lanka ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2016. Nonetheless, successive administrations have not successfully enacted the necessary legislation for effective implementation, he noted, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
He also disclosed intentions to reduce taxes on tools that facilitate better living conditions for differently-abled individuals over the next five years.
Furthermore, he mentioned that initiatives will be established to guarantee that disabled persons have specialized access to all government buildings and public transportation.
