Colombo, Sep 22 (NationPress) On Monday, Sri Lankan authorities apprehended a truck that was carrying approximately 200 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (ICE) and heroin, as reported by a police spokesperson.
Police representative F.U. Wootler informed the press that the truck was seized in Tangalle, located in Sri Lanka's Southern province, with the narcotics cleverly concealed among a shipment of watermelons.
In the past few weeks, authorities have uncovered significant amounts of drugs and precursor materials in the region, according to reports from the Xinhua news agency.
In a different incident on the same day, police found over 10 kilograms of a substance believed to be crystal methamphetamine in a truck parked near a residential area.
Earlier this month, law enforcement officials seized nearly 50,000 kilograms of raw materials thought to be utilized for the production of crystal methamphetamine in Middeniya, a locality in southern Sri Lanka.
This news comes shortly after the police declared the confiscation of nearly one metric tonne of heroin and 13 tonnes of cannabis during operations conducted so far this year.
The police spokesperson, F.U. Wootler, during a press briefing in Colombo, disclosed that a total of 955 kilograms of heroin, 1,422 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, 471 kilograms of hashish, 29 kilograms of cocaine, and 13,773 kilograms of cannabis have been seized. Additionally, 3.5 million narcotic pills have been taken off the streets.
Throughout these operations, a total of 1,721 firearms were also confiscated.
Wootler further noted that 328 individuals have been arrested in connection with various shooting incidents. This group includes 38 gunmen, 27 getaway drivers, and 263 individuals charged with assisting these offenses.
Since January 12, police have executed daily special operations, interviewing a total of 5,101,516 people and making 104,602 arrests, according to the police spokesperson.
