Guwahati, Sep 22 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed on Monday that a second autopsy for renowned singer Zubeen Garg will take place on Tuesday prior to his final rites.
Sarma explained that this decision came in response to the wishes of the singer's fans, many of whom suspect foul play regarding his unexpected passing in Singapore last week while swimming in the ocean.
“An autopsy was previously conducted in Singapore, and I trust it was performed without bias, as the authorities there have no predisposition towards either Zubeen Garg or Himanta Biswa Sarma. However, due to public demand for another examination, we have opted to proceed,” the Chief Minister told the press.
He noted that the state government consulted Garg’s wife, Garima Garg, before moving forward with the procedure.
“I instructed Union Minister Pabitra Margherita to connect with Garima Garg. She indicated that the government holds the authority to decide on the second post-mortem, leading us to schedule it for tomorrow morning at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital,” Sarma added.
Medical professionals from AIIMS will also participate in the autopsy, which is set to commence at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday and is expected to last approximately 90 minutes. Following the examination, Garg’s remains will be transported to the Sarusajai Sports Complex, marking the start of his final journey.
The Chief Minister mentioned that due to the autopsy, the program for Tuesday has been adjusted.
Earlier, Sarma noted that Zubeen Garg's funeral procession would be kept simple and respectful, with a limited number of vehicles accompanying the ambulance transporting his remains.
“Alongside the ambulance, a small bus carrying his wife, close family, and friends will follow. No additional vehicles will join the procession. Just as we brought him from the airport, we will ensure a smooth journey to the cremation ground,” he stated.
Upon arrival at the cremation site, the remains will be carried by pallbearers from the Assam Police from the highway to the venue. A guard of honor and a gun salute will be given before the priest performs the final rites as per the family’s wishes.
“Family members are coordinating with the priest, and once they are present, the rituals will proceed according to their preferences. We are prepared to follow their guidance,” Sarma remarked.
To maintain order during the farewell, the government has implemented strict security and traffic regulations.
The Chief Minister announced that no vehicles will be allowed to enter from the Jagiroad side on the day of the funeral, although those traveling to Meghalaya will be permitted passage. Traffic from the Jorabat side will also be limited for four to five hours to ensure a dignified ceremony.
A state mourning period has been declared until Tuesday in honor of the music legend’s passing. The remains of Assam’s beloved singer, Zubeen Garg, arrived in his hometown on Sunday morning, drawing immense grief as thousands gathered to pay their final respects.
