Guwahati, Oct 9 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized on Thursday that the BJP administration in the state is working diligently to ensure justice for Zubeen Garg, who tragically lost his life while swimming in the waters of Singapore last month.
Sarma informed reporters, “Initially, there were concerns that those accountable for the unexpected demise of our cherished Zubeen Garg might evade justice with bail. However, it is now evident that we have apprehended five individuals, including the singer's cousin, Sandipan Garg. The BJP-led government has taken swift action, and these individuals are now behind bars. We are committed to pursuing justice for Zubeen Garg at all costs.”
The Chief Minister also directed criticism towards the opposition, stating, “During the Congress administration in Assam, they took a minimum of three days to determine the cremation site for Bhupen Hazarika. That was the level of efficiency then, while today, we have successfully detained all five suspects related to Zubeen Garg's untimely death.”
Notably, the Assam Police officer and cousin of Zubeen Garg, Sandipan Garg, has been placed in seven days of police custody following his arrest. Sandipan, who serves as a Deputy Superintendent in the Assam Police Service, was also present at the yacht party in Singapore on September 19, where the music icon tragically drowned.
Zubeen Garg traveled to Singapore for the northeast India music festival, accompanied by Sandipan Garg, to enjoy the event.
The arrested Assam Police officer has been interrogated by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating Zubeen Garg's death for the past week. Sandipan Garg was presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kamrup district, who ordered him to be held for seven days in police custody.
The SIT, led by CID Special DGP M. P. Gupta, informed reporters, “We requested 14 days of police custody for Sandipan Garg; however, the court granted only seven days. As the investigation continues, I cannot disclose further details regarding Garg’s arrest.”
Gupta also mentioned that an Assamese individual based in Singapore, Rup Kamal Kalita, appeared before the SIT for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, while the CID is preparing to issue fresh summons to other NRIs who were present at the yacht on September 19.
On October 1, the team arrested Zubeen's manager, Siddharth Sharma, and event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, who coordinated the music festival in Singapore where the singer was expected to perform. Both individuals are facing charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Subsequently, two of Zubeen's bandmates, musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and singer Amritprabha Mahanta, were also taken into custody and remanded for 14 days for further questioning.
