Sudan's Burhan Appeals to UN for Action Against Arms Flow to Darfur

Khartoum, Dec 24 (NationPress) The head of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, has called upon the United Nations (UN) to implement measures that would ensure adherence to Security Council resolutions concerning the prohibition of arms entering the Darfur area in western Sudan, as well as the ongoing assaults on El Fasher city.

Al-Burhan, who also serves as the general commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), made these statements during a meeting with the UN Secretary-General's envoy to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, in the eastern city of Port Sudan, as reported in a statement by the sovereign council, according to Xinhua news agency.

He emphasized Sudan's dedication to collaborating with the UN in developing a unified vision for future endeavors across all sectors, including the protection of civilians. He urged both the UN and the international community to exert pressure on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and to denounce their violations.

The UN envoy, in response, informed reporters that the discussions focused on the current situation in Sudan.

“During our meeting, I reaffirmed that the UN is actively involved and supports a negotiated resolution to the crisis in Sudan,” Lamamra stated.

He noted that the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for nearly two years, has caused numerous casualties. The envoy indicated that the UN and its agencies are prepared to enhance cooperation with Sudan to find a resolution to the crisis and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese populace.

On June 13, the UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding an end to the RSF's siege of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, which has been under siege since May 10.

On September 11, the UN Security Council unanimously agreed to extend the sanctions regime on Sudan, which includes asset freezes, travel prohibitions, and an arms embargo, until September 12, 2025.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a catastrophic conflict between the SAF and the RSF.

This violent struggle has resulted in over 28,700 fatalities and displaced more than 14 million individuals, both internally and externally, as per the latest estimates from international organizations.
